James Cock and Nancy Bowker - my great great great grandparents

 

James Cock was baptised on 18th October 1869 at St Michael’s, Ashton-under-Lyne. His parents were John Cock, a gentleman and churchwarden, and Alice Catlow, daughter of the Curate and Schoolteacher. Nancy Bowker was baptised on 17th June 1770 at St Michael's, Ashton under Lyne. Her parents were George Bowker, and Mary. See also ancestry of the Cock family.

James and Nancy were married on the 28th June1789 at St Mary’s Stockport. James was a weaver. James and Nancy lived in Denton from at least 1803-1809, and Haughton from at least 1811-1815. James died in Denton subdistrict in October quarter 1838, and was buried at St Lawrence’s Denton on 10th October 1838. James clearly left a will, there is a death duty record, and an entry ehich I presume is in the Act book, but no will has been found yet. Nancy died in October quarter 1852. She was living at Tib Street Denton.

They had 11 children: -

John Cock was born at Denton and was baptised on 18th July 1790 at St Lawrence’s, Denton. He was a hatter and married Fanny, they had 2 children

William Cock was born at Denton and was baptised on 26th Aug 1792 at St Lawrence’s, Denton. He was a hatter and married Charlotte Basnett on 26th June 1815 at Manchester Cathedral. They had 7 children.

James Cock was born at Denton and was baptised on 1st Mar 1795 at St Lawrence’s, Denton. Nothing more is known about James.

Sarah Cock was born at Haughton and was baptised on 13th May 1798 at St Lawrence’s, Denton. She married William Lees, a hatter and later a farmer. They had 5 children, William died in July quarter 1866 in Denton Subdistrict, and Sarah died in January quarter 1881 in Ashton district.

Mary Cock was born at Denton and was born on 20th December 1800, and baptised on 1st Feb 1801 at St Lawrence’s, Denton.

Jane Cock was born on 10th Jan 1803 at Denton, was baptised on 6th March 1803 at St Lawrence’s, Denton. Nothing more is know of Mary.

Anne Cock was born on 7th Sep 1805 at Denton, was baptised on 13th October 1805 at St Lawrence’s, Denton. Nothing more is know of Anne.

Nancy Cock was born on 16th Mar 1809 at Denton, was baptised on 14th May 1809 at St Lawrence’s, Denton. She died in Denton and was buried at St Lawrence’s, Denton on 24th July 1806 aged 20 weeks.

Esther Cock was born on 7th Feb 1811 at Haughton, was baptised on 14th April 1811 at St Lawrence’s, Denton. She was staying with her mother in 1841 as a female servant, but nothing is know after that.

George Bowker Cock, my great great grandfather, was born on 5th Mar 1813 at Haughton, was baptised on 18th April 1813 at St Lawrence’s, Denton. He married Mary Bond, daughter of William Bond and Anne née Knight, on 6th July 1835 at Manchester Cathedral. George, after being initially a hatter, was also a warehouseman, a bookkeeper and a cotton mill hand. They had 8 children, see here. He added the s’ on the surname after 1851. George died between 1861 and 1871. Mary died in Jun quarter 1898 in Hyde subdistrict, her maiden name given as middle name, May Bond Cocks.

Eliza Cock was born on 5th Aug 1815 at Haughton, was baptised on  at St Lawrence’s, Denton. She married James Catlow at an unknown place and time. They had 7 children. Eliza died possibly in 1857 in Denton subdistrict (name given as Elizabeth, but age correct). James died in April quarter 1887 in Ashton district.
