Roy Allen Moraghan

 

 

Roy (also given as Ray on a couple of army records) was born according to his birth 1915 in Armidale, though his army record gives 1.10.1918. His parents were Reginald Moraghan and Amy Holmes.

He enlisted in the Army on the 12th May 1940 at Caulfield, Victoria. His address is give as  230 Canterbury Road, St Kilda, Victoria. He is married (just in 1940) to Thelma Beatrice Gray. He was a clerk at the time of enlistment. He joined the 7th Australian Signals division, and Embarked from Sydney, arriving in the Middle East on the 26th November. On 19th December he is promoted to Sergeant. He left the Middle East on 4th February 1942, trans-shipping’ at Colombo to the SS Orestes, disembarking at Adelaide on the 15th March 1942.

He went AWOL from 23.3.1942 to 3.4.1942. He was court-martialled at Tenterfield on 13th May and reduced to the ranks.

He picked up a more minor charge conduct to the prejudice of good order and military discipline on 27.7.1942. The punishment is 7 days CB’.

He was divorced on the 3rd December 1948, and remarried to Elizabeth Joyce Thorpe in Wallsend in 1951

Roy died on 27th November 2003 at Malabar, and was buried at St Andrew's Catholic Church in Malabar. Elizabeth died on 23rd April 1995 and was also buried at St Andrew's.
