The Will of Samuel Knight butcher of Denton 1803 |
I Samuel Knight of Denton in the Parish of Manchester in the County
of Lancaster Butcher who being aged but of sound Mind Memory & Understanding
Do make and publish this my last Will and Testament in Manner and Form
following that is to say First I will order and direct that all my just debts
Funeral Expenses and the charges of the Probate and Execution of this my
Will shall be paid and discharged by my Executors hereinafter named and of my
Real and personal Estate and Effects And I order and direct that my Estate of
Inheritance situate lying in and being within Denton aforesaid shall be, as soon as
Conveniently may be after my decease in such shares and propositions and for the
purposes hereinafter mentioned, that is to say, The Messuage of Dwelling House &
other Buildings in the present Occupation of my son John Knight and the three Closes
of Land (part of my said Estate) called the Long Field the Highest Field and Half-
Acre and on such Valuation thereof being so made and taken I order the Amount to
be paid in Money by my said Son John into the Hands of my said Executors
subject to such Division and Application thereof as is hereinafter mentioned
And after the payment of such valuation as aforesaid I do devise the said Messuage
Buildings and the said three Closes of Land to my said son John Knight his
Heirs and Assigns for ever Also I do order and direct the Residue & Remainder
of my said Estate lying and being in Denton aforesaid to be valued by such same
Men and in like Manner as hereinbefore mentioned in respect to the other part
thereof and the Amount in Money of such Valuation shall be paid to by my Son
Samuel Knight into the hands of my said Executors subject to the like
Division and Application And after the payment of such Valuation as aforesaid
I do devise such Residue and Remainder of my said Estate to my son Samuel
Knight his Heirs and Assigns for ever. And I hereby order and direct that
the said Sums of Money being the amount of the Valuations aforesaid
together with all and every part of my personal Estate and Effects of what
Nature of kind soever (Except my Seats or sitting places in Denton (?????)
shall be made into five equal parts or Shares and each of my said Sons
John Knight Samuel Knight Thomas Knight and Nathan Knight and my
Daughter Ann the wife of John Bentley shall have the same share and
part alike and for want of my said Sons or Daughter and the time of such
Distribution the Share of Shares respectively of him her or them shall go to and be
the property of his her of their respective legal Representatives And I give and
devise my three Seats of Sitting Places in that Pew, a part of which belongs to the
Shepley Estate situate and being within the Chapel of Denton aforesaid unto my Son
Samuel Knight his Heirs and Assigns for ever And I give and devise my two
Seats of Sitting Places lately purchased by me from the late Mr Birch
deceased also situate with the Chapel of Denton aforesaid unto my Son Thomas
Knight his Heirs and Assigns for ever Two other Seats or Sitting Places in
the same place purchased also from Mr Birch I give and devise unto my Son
Nathan Knight his Heirs and Assigns for Ever And the remaining part of the
said Pew I give and devise unto may said son Samuel Knight his Heirs
and Assigns for ever And I nominate and appoint my said two Sons Thomas
Knight and Nathan Knight Executors of this my last Will and Testament
And direct will and order that they and each of them and each of their Heirs
shall & may retain and satisfy to themselves respectively all such Costs Charges
and Expenses as they or either of them shall be an pay or be put unto in the Execution of
this my will together with a reasonable and fair Compensation and Allowance for
their and each of their Trouble and Attendance in and concerning the same And
lastly I revoke all former wills by me made and declare this present Writing to
be and contain my last Will and Testament only In Witness whereof I the said
Samuel Knight have hereunto set my Hand and Seal the twenty third day of
March in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and three
